Linda and I left
Columbus on July 13 and arrived at Gatwick AIrport on July 14, 1993. We returned
home on July 29, 1993. The only reservation we had was a rental car at Gatwick.
We plotted a loose route ahead of time with the plan to stay in B&Bs along the
way. We'd drop in at the local information center in various towns and book a
B&B for one or two nights. As best as I can glean from my notes we stayed in
these towns in this order: Royal Tunbridge Wells, Salisbury, Corwin, Windemere,
Melrose, Scarborough, Newark-on-Trent, Cambridge, and finally Horley where
Gatrwick airport is located. It was not until later when a friend ask me about
the trip that I realised it could have a theme of Castles, Churches, and
Gardens.
My suggestion is to always explore new places and enjoy the new people you meet.
Most places we stayed were in homes that were setup as small “hotels”. One or
two places we literally stayed in our host’s “spare bedroom”. This was our
second trip to England but our first attempt at renting a car. If you are up for
it, it is a lot of fun. But be prepared for narrow roads some barely wide enough
for one car. Along many of the country roads the farm fields, woods, and walls
are literally at the edge of the pavement. For sure, you must get off the main
roads and travel the country back roads. Follow the signs but have a map handy
just in case and never hesitate to ask a local for advice.
The following collection of images were created in my old Minolta film camera.
While it took a licking while visiting Hadrian’s wall on this trip during a
blowing rain storm, it never totally gave up. It was protected at the time but
not well enough. I had to bake it one day in the sun to rid it of excess
moisture and get the autofocus mechanism working. Some months later it came back
to haunt me again when tiny tin whiskers would swell up during periods of high
humidity and cause the failure to return. I had it repaired once and then moved
on to a replacement not long after.
Now enjoy these images from 1993. They present pretty much in time order from
arrival at Gatwick to the morning of departure at our last B&B.
