Germany - Norway - Denmark 2017

June 21 - July 9, 2017

Linda and I embarked on a wonderful trip to see the Fjords of Norway. We were blessed with awesome weather. While we encountered one totally rainy day in Bergen, Norway, most days were sunny to partly cloudy with only an occasional shower.

We started in Hamburg, Germany where we arrived one day before the ship departed for Norway. We managed to walk a number of miles in that first day dodging two thunderstorms. You could see the security details getting ready for the upcoming G20 meeting of world leaders. Our cruise ended in Copenhagen, Denmark so we did not have to experience the craziness of the G20.

After our Hamburg visit, we spent 14 days aboard the Azamara Journey. This is the same ship we have used the past two years. It transports and caters to about 600 passengers. Of the 14 days on the ship, 9 were in ports and the other 5 days we were sailing either in the open ocean or through the fjords. On three occasions we participated in arranged tours. But on all other days in port we wandered around the destination town on our own. Everywhere we went it was beautiful. As in most of these trips there never is enough time to see everything. But you’ll see in the following images we saw many beautiful places.

One of the more interesting parts of the cruise was the fact we spent five days above the arctic circle. This time of year the sun does not dip below the horizon at night. So for five nights we had daylight! Only one of those days was it cloudy. It was kind of strange to see the sun move from west to east at night. It would be interesting to visit the area in winter when the opposite is true – the sun never shines for days on end. Because of the gulf stream, many of the places located by the sea to not have extreme cold. One place the guide told us the average low winter temperature was only 32˚F.

The cruise ended in Copenhagen, Denmark where we spent two additional days before heading back home. Turns out the Friday we arrived in Copenhagen was the start of a week long jazz festival. So at various parts of the city where we ventured we were delighted to be able to hear music for free. There were concerts in courtyards, on the street, and at various temporary stages setup just for the festival. Copenhagen is a busy place but with lots of things to do. We found a nice Italian restaurant for dinner on Friday and a little family run sandwich shop for our lunches - very tasty food.

Always difficult to come home but always nice to be home. Hope you enjoy these selected images as much as I enjoyed making them.
